Who Is A RICorps Member?

Above all else, a RiCorps Member is essentially an AmeriCorps State/National Member. The goal is to support the already existing AmeriCorps mission, the only key difference with RiCorps is that it was made specific to our Ketchikan Community.  As a RiCorps Member, you will be serving youth throughout Ketchikan, helping to engage, motivate, and encourage youth in positive and healthy ways. The program provides members the opportunity to create, initiate, and facilitate youth-focused workshops/activities based on individual skills and talents.

We believe the act of volunteering is selfless, enduring, and rewarding all at the same time. Becoming an AmeriCorps Member is easy, but committing to being one takes genuine passion and perseverance. Our beautiful quaint island town of Ketchikan is not always beautiful. When it comes to what many of our youth and families experience here, statistically, it makes all of our kids at-risk. Some have difficulty with access to resources/services while others are overcoming generational/historical trauma, negative effects from the pandemic, the weather, and much more which has led to overall higher rates of domestic violence, addiction, obesity and suicide.

This means our children need members like you now more than ever. Despite of all of this, many community members and organizations continue to show up for our youth and commit to facing these challenges. We're finding out that although we've made progress, there is still more work that needs to be done.

Skies are often gray here, but there are many days full of sun, too. Enjoy quiet rainy days during the Winter and the local beach or hiking trails during the warmer Summer months. You'll be serving in a community where you will see both good and bad days. But the impact you'll have on our community is priceless. Many of our youth absolutely need positive influences, healthy discipline, and emotional/behavioral competence as many of them have never received that type of care at home. We kindly ask you to consider these factors before applying.

There are several opportunities based on time commitment. We offer Summer Positions (300 hours) to Full-Time Positions (1700 hours). Benefits depend on the length of service.

You should expect to serve a 40 hour week. Our summer program is a little different as we do several overnight trips which cover as much as 16 hours in a day. There will be different schedules depending on the time of year you choose to apply. Your stipend is consistent over the term of service and is not effected by the fluctuation of hours served on a weekly/monthly basis. Your service is measured by the total number of service and will be completed when you acquire the total number of service hours for your position. For instance, the Summer Position is 300 hours and a Member might go on a backpacking trip and log 80 hours in the week, and then work 15 hours.
