KAP Rules and Program Structure
The fundamental goal with all of our programming and rules is for the social and emotional growth of our students. Our cafe for instance is run like a normal restaurant where students wait to be seated and "pay" with a clean table. We have time in the beginning of program for homework and we have a daily schedule of activities.

Attendance Policy
Our attendance policy is the result experience gained in the two years KAP has been open. The focus of this policy to promote participation and encourage your child to be in our space during program time and not our in the Plaza. We also have a responsibility to our neighbors to manage our space in harmony with the greater Plaza Community.

Plaza Passes

Students may enter and exit at anytime during our daily program, though we do have a no re-entry policy. Plaza Passes are available for shopping, walking the Plaza, and of course the restroom. This we hope will encourage students to remain present in our program where they may access all the opportunities we offer. The Plaza also has a policy on unaccompanied minors and we are by default responsible for supervision of our students whether they are in our space or out in the Plaza. A student who leaves our program without a pass may not re-enter for the remained for that day.
We limit the number of passes we issue to respond to a trend which has been growing since we opened, of students disrupting business and plaza patrons, congregating in front of businesses, and in more extreme cases throwing things from the upper level. Much of this behavior was not intended to be disruptive but is not respectful among the greater Ketchikan community.
While in our Space Students are expected to be respectful of fellow students and staff. In the event a student is in conflict with this expectation we will create an opportunity for that student to talk with one of our staff where we will see how their day is going and help them understand better ways to express their ideas among their peers. We will not tolerate any aggressive or bully behavior, and will contact Parents/ Guardians in these instances. In a extreme or unchanging situation a student may be exited from our program until we can sit down to a discussion with parents/guardians and the student. To date KAP has only had one instance of this.

Participation

Each student is expected to participate in at least one of our workshops, or regularly engage in self study or homework. KAP is a place fore students to come and relax, so these expectations are not indented to keep students "busy", but to facilitate the development of time management skills. Our workshops and activities provide opportunities to learn new things our our community and themselves, and expand their skills, or learn about healthy lifestyles and practices. Such things are the foundation of unshakable self confidence.
All of workshops involve educational elements such as Hydroponic Gardening, Life Skills, or Music instruction. Math and science are not just academic at KAP, but applied to the growing fo food or the texture of a musical composition. Logistical and organizational skills is another way to describe film making. Bouldering is a hands on approach to geology, risk assessment and situational awareness. In may of our workshops the science and math is inherent and the Student simple learns it as the move to understand the activity.
