The climbing lifestyle imparts a "solution oriented outlook" in those who practice, and a high level of total body fitness. Climbing brings one into nature and strengthens connection to the natural world as well as to their true strength and self awareness. Alaska is known throughout the world for its alpine climbing opportunities and Ketchikan sits 60 miles from a relatively unknown rock climbing jewel; Misty Fjords.
We started our Climbing Program at the Ketchikan Recreation Center getting one day each week on their traverse wall. The wall wasn't ideal but more than adequate for a beginner's workshop. Only one day a week was a bigger issue as fitness gains really wouldn't happen. So we decided to build our own. Now the Climbing workshop is 3 days each week and we've got plans to build a bigger wall if we can generate enough community support. Ultimately we would like to lead outdoor climbing trips.
